This is the official website of the Celtic Coin Index (CCI), the premier collection of records on late Iron Age coins from Britain. The CCI was founded in 1961 by Derek Allen and Sheppard Frere at the School of Archaeology at Oxford. The paper card index now holds nearly 70,000 records of around 50,000 specimens. For almost sixty years, the CCI staff have been collating and curating a card catalogue with written descriptions and (in many cases) photographs of the coins. Since 2004, it has also been linked with the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the British Museum.
The Celtic Coin Index is one of the largest datasets of Iron Age coinage worldwide and is a major source of evidence for late Iron Age Britain. However, owing to its long and complex history, the CCI is only partially in digital form, with many records still on file cards and not fully digitally accessible.
As part of the Celtic Coin Index Digital (CCID) project (2019-present), our team of researchers has been digitising the cards and their data. Eventually, we will publish them here.
